Step-by-Step: How to Make Homemade Cat Pate

Step 1: Prep the Ingredients

  • Wash the pumpkin. Clean the chicken breast and liver.
  • Remove all skin and visible fat from the chicken (these can cause diarrhea).
  • Chop everything into chunks about two fingers thick for even cooking.
  • If using carrots, peel and slice.

Step 2: Boil the Ingredients

  • Place all ingredients in a pot.
  • Add just enough water to cover the ingredients, don’t add too much or the pate will turn watery.
  • Bring to a boil, then lower the heat and simmer until soft and fully cooked.

Step 3: Blend the Mixture

  • Transfer the cooked ingredients to a blender (in batches if needed).
  • Add 1–2 wedges of cheese and ¼ teaspoon of salt.
  • Blend until smooth, but not too fine. Leave a little texture so your cat can chew, which aids digestion.
  • Use chopsticks to test the consistency. If it’s too thick, blend a bit more with added water.

Step 4: Simmer the Blended Pate

  • Pour the blended mixture back into a pot.
  • Simmer on medium heat while stirring to avoid burning the bottom.
  • Adjust the thickness by adding water based on your cat’s preference.
  • Simmer for a few minutes until it becomes fragrant and smooth.

Tip: If your cat doesn’t drink much water, make the pate more diluted to increase water intake, this helps prevent kidney stones.

And that’s it! Your fragrant, homemade cat pate is ready. Let it cool before serving it to your furry friend.

Storage Tips

If you’re making a big batch, here’s how to store it properly:

  • Let the pate cool before refrigerating.
  • Scoop into airtight containers, leaving a bit of space at the top (don’t overfill to avoid bloated lids).
  • Storage time: Fridge (chilled): Up to 3–5 days; Freezer (frozen): Up to 20 days

When defrosting, don’t heat directly in plastic. Instead, transfer to a ceramic bowl and warm using a microwave or double-boiler. .

Important Notes When Making Cat Pate

  • Cats in the wild don’t eat seasoned food, so don’t add spices or seasonings (just a tiny bit of salt for preservation and trace minerals).
  • You can replace pumpkin with other vegetables like cabbage, depending on your cat’s taste.
  • You may mix pate with rice to stretch the meal, but it’s best served on its own for full nutrition.
  • Avoid making too much at once. Homemade pate spoils faster and wasted food = wasted effort
  • Occasionally rotate ingredients to prevent mealtime boredom.
  • Only feed pate to cats 2 months and older. Younger kittens should stick to lean meats and kitten milk like: Bio Milk For Pet; Petlac Milk for Kittens; KMR (Kitten Milk Replacer); Royal Canin Babycat Milk; Dr. Kyan Precaten; Birthright Milk; CocoKat Milk Replacer.
